Javi Eraso has slowly seen his minutes dwindle at Athletic Club. After returning in 2015, the 27-year-old played rather steady minutes and was seen as an important player for Ernesto Valverde. However, that has changed with Raul Garcia and Iker Muniain splitting time as the central attacking midfielder.
This season, Eraso has played less than 500 minutes and a total of 11 appearances across all competitions. It has become clear that he simply doesn’t have a place in the team, especially with Ager Aketxe and Unai Lopez fighting for a spot next season while on loan this year. Luckily for Eraso, he will have suitors.
According to whispers around Bilbao this week, both Alaves and Eibar are interested in signing Javi Eraso. Either side could give him regular minutes and the chance to battle for a starting role. While any Segunda team would love to have him, the midfielder would rather stay in the Primera.
It isn’t known what Athletic plans to do with Eraso. His contract doesn’t expire until 2018 so they could choose to keep him as a depth player. However, his lack of chances points to the more likely scenario of him making an exit during the summer transfer window. Athletic has a basic relationship with Eibar, but things have been strained with Alaves over the years. Last summer the Lions allowed Ibai Gomez to join Alaves for free and they may choose to do the same with Eraso to continue repairing that relationship with their neighbors.
