Athletic Club’s interest in Alex Berenguer only continues to grow. The Osasuna winger is a bright young footballer with pace and phenomenal dribbling skills and the Lions want to bring him to the San Mames this summer. Negotiating with Osasuna is always going to difficult, but Athletic may have the upper hand this time around.
According to a report from Javi Beltran of AS, Athletic may be able to sign Berenguer for as little as €4 million this summer.
So far, Osasuna has refused to negotiate with Athletic for anything lower than Berenguer’s release clause. If the club is relegated, which seems very likely, that clause will drop to €9 million. While that may not be a huge amount in today’s transfer market, Athletic would still like to lower that number. As we recently reported, the two sides will begin negotiation meetings after Easter.
Osasuna are expected to begin those meetings by requesting the release clause again, but due to their financial problems and the likelihood of relegation, they may be forced to sell for less. Beltran says that Athletic could sign the 21-year-old for €4 million, which would be twice as much as they offered last summer. The report goes on to say that, barring some unforeseen change, Alex Berenguer should be an Athletic Club player when next season begins.
