Alex Berenguer remains one of Athletic Club’s top transfer targets along with Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Mikel Merino. The Lions know that prying the 21-year-old away from Osasuna will not be easy, but they are ready to make a strong push to sign the versatile winger. According to a report from Diarrio Navarra, the two sides will meet after Easter to negotiate the potential transfer.
Last summer, Athletic made a €2.5 million bid for Berenguer that was immediately rejected. The Lions came back in January with a doubled offer that was rejected yet again. After playing his first Primera match, Berenguer’s release clause rose to €18 million, but if Osasuna gets relegated it will drop back do to only €9 million. The report says that Osasuna will not sell to Athletic Club for anything less than that clause.
Luckily for Athletic, it seems almost certain that Osasuna will be relegated this season. They are at the bottom of the table and thirteen points off the first safe zone with seven matches left to play. It is common knowledge that Berenguer does not want to play in the Segunda next season and is eyeing a stay in the Primera. He is aware of Athletic’s interest and has even admitted that “It is nice that they are interested in me”.
Berenguer would provide much needed depth for Athletic Club and an added spark in attack. He is able to play left-back or on either wing in a more advanced role. He is extremely fast with a intense work rate, and his dribbling ability can always cause problems. His addition would immediately improve the Athletic squad so fans will be hoping that the negotiations with Osasuna end in a positive way.
