Quique Setien Denies Contacts With Athletic Club

There are a lot of questions about the future of Athletic Club with Ernesto Valverde currently considering a potential offer to take over at Barcelona. One of the potential options to replace him is Las Palmas coach, Quique Setien, who has also been linked to other La Liga clubs. In a recent interview, Setien made it clear that he hasn’t spoken to anyone at Athletic Club, or anywhere else for that matter.

“Things will always be taken out of context and manipulated. Maybe it’s my fault because I haven’t avoided controversy. Next week I will be in Bilbao and they will ask me about possibly coaching Athletic. I have a lot of respect for Athletic, but I haven’t spoken to anyone at the club. Celta is a lot like Athletic and also Villarreal and Valencia. I have been linked to them all for the future. It has nothing to do with me, I haven’t talked to anyone at all.”

The future of Ernesto Valverde is still very much a mystery. He could decide to leave Athletic Club in favor of Barcelona or perhaps an English club, but he could also choose to remain in charge of the Basque giants. If he does step away, Bilbao Athletic manager Cuco Ziganda is the heavy favorite to take over the helm as first team head coach. He is currently being backed by President Josu Urrutia and the vast majority of the board.

Setien will be a name to watch this summer. He has done an excellent job while in charge of Las Palmas and has already announced that he will be leaving the club when the season ends. It is only natural that his name would be linked to Athletic and it is believed that Sporting Director, Jose Maria Amorrortu, is in favor of bringing in Setien instead of promoting Ziganda. Many tough decisions will have to be made this summer, but fans are still holding out that Ernesto Valverde will remain in Bilbao.
