Alex Berenguer’s Agent Admits Interest From Athletic Club

It is no secret that Athletic Club have been keeping a very close eye on Osasuna winger Alex Berenguer. The 21-year-old began to turn heads last season during his club’s rise back to the Primera and the Lions initially made an offer of €2 million that was rejected. After a strong first season in the top flight, Athletic will be going after him against this summer and the player’s agent has already admitted in a recent interview that there is interest.

“He [Berenguer] has suitors, logically. Athletic may be one of the them, but they aren’t the only ones. It isn’t that Osasuna can’t accept Athletic’s offer, its just that they will have to pay more. We all know that when Athletic comes for a footballer they have to overpay. It is unfair that he could only leave for his €9 million clause, but we will see. Let’s see if Athletic, or another team, will come again.”

Berenguer currently has a release clause of €9 million and that is expected to be the number that Athletic will have to match if they want to sign him. However, Osasuna’s likely relegation back to the Segunda could force their hand into selling one of their top young players. It has also been rumored that there is interest from other clubs such as Levante, though their financial problems would make it difficult to directly compete with Athletic Club for his signature.

Athletic’s interest in Berenguer is solid and they want to sign the winger. He would bring versatility, due to the fact that he can play in multiple positions, and a spark in attack that would add a new dynamic to the team. Fans will have to wait until the summer to see if the Lions can land their prized target, but he would be well worth the money.
