It has been a busy week for Lezama with two new players being added to the fabled youth academy. Gernika forward, Inigo Munoz, and Santutxu midfielder, Unai Vencedor, have been signed for the upcoming season, but the Lions are not stopping there. According to reports they are also in talks to sign Real Sociedad B forward, Eneko Jauregi, who is out of contract at the end of the season. However, there will likely be another young footballer announced in the coming weeks. After rejecting a renewal offer from Alaves, Athletic are close to finalizing a deal that will see striker Asier Benito join Bilbao Athletic for the upcoming campaign.
Benito is the leading scorer for Alaves B this season and a very talented player. The 22-year-old is quite versatile and knows how to use his speed to cause problems for defenders. His best quality is his movement away from the ball and ability to shift into other positions in attack to create holes and chances in front of goal. His contract expires in June and there will be no renewal despite Alaves offering him quite a lucrative deal for his age. He already made his first team debut last season and other clubs, such as Eibar, have kept a close eye on the forward.
According to a recent report from El Correo, the striker had several demands before he would sign a new deal with Alaves. Even after those were agreed to, he took the advice of his father and chose to reject the contract in hopes of returning to Athletic Club. Benito spent 2011-2012 at Lezama and has always dreamed of returning and fighting for a chance to play at the San Mames one day. He has been in talks with the Lions since rejecting the renewal offer from Alaves and it is believed that it will only be a matter of time before he officially signs with Bilbao Athletic for next season. Alaves B have left him out of the squad in a few big games since turning them down so it is clear that he is on the way out, with his Athletic dream close to becoming a reality.
This won’t be the first time that Athletic have lured a young star away from Alaves. Just a few years ago they secured the move of Mikel Vesga who went on to help Bilbao Athletic earn promoting to the Segunda. Vesga then began this season with the first team and is now on loan with Sporting Gijon where he is playing at a very high level and making his case for the first team next season. Alaves is a club with a strong youth academy and Athletic like to keep a close eye on their neighbors.
