The most important thing at Athletic Club is youth development and that normally involves finding more players to add to Lezama every season. This offseason will be no different and the Lions already have their eyes on several young stars who could become the new faces of Lezama. However, it is also necessary to try to bring in players on the cusp of first team football and there is someone who fits that bill that Athletic are currently monitoring – Eneko Jauregi of Real Sociedad.
Jauregi is currently playing for Real Sociedad B and has become a regular starter since the emergence of Jon Bautista to the first team. The 20-year-old has featured in 20 games, but has only recently been the main starter and has scored 4 goals since the change. Jauregi is a tall striker who uses his physicality and aerial ability to punish defenders and there is belief that he could one day be in the discussion for the Primera. If he signed he would join Bilbao Athletic to strengthen the squad and replace the likes of Asier Villalibre who will be taking an official step up next season.
The former Gernika standout is out of contract in June, but Real Sociedad have put a renewal offer on the table. However, he has yet to agree to a renewal and has started fielding offers from other clubs. According to reports, he is interested in joining Athletic Club who are believed to have offered him a contract to join Bilbao Athletic.
If Jauregi decides to join Athletic Club it certainly won’t be the first time that the Lions have taken a promising talent away from their bitter rivals. Just last summer they managed to sign Iker Hernandez from Real Sociedad and years before they brought in Unai Lopez who has since gone on to make his first team debut. It should be noted that there is a lot of depth at striker coming through Lezama, but Sporting Director Jose Maria Amorrortu knows that replacing Aritz Aduriz one day will not be easy and having plenty of great options is very important.
