Laporte: I Have Shown That I Want To Be At Athletic Club

Aymeric Laporte was a special guest on Radio Euskadi on Thursday night and had several topics to touch on. To begin with, the 22-year-old discussed the quality at Athletic and praised teammate Inaki Williams who has been under scrutiny this season for a lack of goals. When asked about his future at Athletic, Laporte was quick to say that he has already proven that he wants to stay at Athletic Club.

“We have a team with incredible players and we can play better than we have. Our goal is to get as far up the table as possible, but objective number 1 is to finish in the top 6. We haven’t been strong on the road so we have to add points outside of the San Mames to return to Europe. Athletic should be in Europe every year. We have the quality to compete and try to win in Europe every season. Inaki’s goal drought? Inaki is playing at a high level, he has great qualities. He’s shown what he is capable of. My future? I have always been quiet about my future. I have renewed my contract 5 times and I have shown that I want to be at Athletic.”

Laporte was not called up for the France National Team despite being on of the best young center-backs in Europe. He has yet to make his debut for Les Bleus and he said that it is starting to give him anxiety. Regardless, he has ruled out playing for Spain instead because his childhood dream was to play for France.

“I want to convince Didier Deschamps because I have anxiety about making my France debut. Making my debut with with France is a dream. It has been my number 1 goal since I was a child. There were doubts, but the idea of playing for Spain has been ruled out.”

In closing, the Lezama graduate was asked about Ernesto Valverde who is one of the candidates to replace Luis Enrique at Barcelona. Laporte says that Valverde is one of the best coaches in Europe and that he hopes Txingurri remains in Bilbao next season.

“Right now Valverde is one of the best coaches in all of Europe, no doubt. He has always been confidence in me, he’s given me a lot. It’s his decision to make, but we really hope that he stays here at Athletic.”
