Kepa Arrizabalaga is one of the best young goalkeepers in all of football. For many years he has been seen as the heir to the throne at Athletic Club and this season he reached that pinnacle. He has become the undisputed starter and his future looks very bright. It will come as no surprise that Athletic want to keep their Lezama product around for the long term.
According to a report from El Correo, Kepa and Athletic have already agreed to an extension that will see him stay with his boyhood club until 2022. There are still some kinks in the contract to work out which is why it isn’t officially signed and confirmed at this point, but an announcement could come as early as the end of March when he returns from international duty.
Kepa’s current contract is set to expire in 2018 so getting a long term deal in place was a priority for the Basque giants. It will be interesting to see where his release clause is set, with rumors suggesting it could be somewhere around €40 million.
When he was younger, Kepa turned down approaches from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Arsenal. His commitment to Athletic has never been questioned and it will be wonderful to see the Lezama legend further his stay at the San Mames where is quickly becoming a super star. It should also be noted that the 22-year-old was recently called up to the Spain U21 team, but due to an injury of Pepe Reina, he has been training with the main Spain squad. His future is certainly bright.
