Raul Garcia: If Valverde Stays It Will Be Good For Us

Athletic Club midfielder Raul Garcia was a special guest on Cadena Ser Friday night and answered questions about several different topics. With Real Madrid coming to the San Mames on Saturday, the midfielder was quick to point out that you always want to test yourself against the best. Athletic have been spectacular at home this season, but the midfielder says that doesn’t guarantee anything.

“Playing against a strong rival every footballer wants to demonstrate that they can win. These are the games that allow you to really test yourself. A draw is not guaranteed, but we have been playing well at home. We aren’t really thinking of just a draw, we want all three points.”

Garcia was then asked about his former club, Atletico Madrid, and their chances to win the Champions League. He also competed Ernesto Valverde and former manager Diego Simeone.

“Atletico can win the Champions League and I really hope that they do. I will be cheering for them. Valverde and Simeone are similar coaches, but the way they convey things is different. Cholo is very intense and Valverde is much calmer. If he [Valverde] stays it will be really good for us because he is a great coach. I hope he decides to stay here.”

Ernesto Valverde is believed to be the top target to replace Luis Enrique at Barcelona next season, but he will ultimately have to make that choice. He has already turned down Barcelona once before and the Athletic players are hoping that he makes the same decision once again.
