Athletic 1-2 Real Madrid: Postgame Player And Coaches Comments

The Lions suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Real Madrid on Saturday despite putting in a very strong performance. A win would have seen Athletic climb to within one point of the European zone of the La Liga table, but instead they head into the international break four points back of 6th place. Here is what the players had to say following only the second loss at the San Mames this season.

Aritz Aduriz “My goal? Goals don’t mean anything if they don’t bring the team anything. We dominated the game. Maybe we didn’t create enough chances but they scored from their two attempts. You have to finish chances. We got close to Keylor Navas a few times, but he made good saves. It was a hot match. Of course there was intensity, but I think it was a super clean and super noble match. It was a nice game and we played well. We probably deserved more.”

Yeray “We showed our best face. We knew the match was going to be difficult, but we are satisfied with our performance. We made things difficult for them. It is unfortunate that the ball skipped to the back for the last goal. Perhaps we were paying too much attention to Sergio Ramos. We at least deserved a draw. Ernesto Valverde’s decision? When the Mister makes a decision he will tell us.”

Valverde “This is a game of details and mistakes, sometimes you make those mistakes and sometimes your opponents do. They beat us in the two chances they had. Every time they passed midfield they created danger, but I think we did well. From the start we tried to dominate the game and we had chances going forward. We conceded two goals and the second hurt us because we wanted to settle back into the game. We are happy with our performance, but not the result. I think we played well and deserved more.”
