Inigo Vicente is one of the most exciting Lezama products of the last decade and with good reason. The striker, who turned 19 in January, has set several scoring records through Athletic’s youth ranks and is currently playing for feeder club CD Basconia which is managed by legend Joseba Etxeberria. As of now, he leads Tercera Group IV with 13 goals in 26 games. To protect one of their brightest young stars, Athletic has officially extended his contract.
According to Ramon Suso of Mundo Deportivo, Vicente has signed a contract extension that will run through 2020. The new deal also sets his release clause at €10 million but that number will double whenever he makes it to the first team. In truth, Vicente’s generation may be most of the most talented in recent Lezama history.
Vicente has also spent time with Bilbao Athletic this year and has been impressive no matter what level he has competed against. Though still very young, the striker is believed to be the next big thing in Bilbao and it is only a matter of time before he makes his debut with the first team. He is expected to be fully promoted to Bilbao Athletic next season, though that may also be the year that he sees time with the first team squad on some occasions.
The 19-year-old was monitored by both Barcelona and Real Madrid a few years back, but Athletic refused their proposal to let him tryout for their youth teams. Last year he set the Lezama scoring record with the Juvenil A team by scoring 35 goals, breaking the mark set by Inaki Williams. The sky really is the ceiling for Inigo Vicente and there is definitely reason to be excited about what the coming years may bring at the San Mames.
